Airplane!

Airplane! turns disaster-movie material inside out and keeps finding new jokes in the wreckage, which is why it still feels brisk decades later. By our assessment, its real strength is the density of the gags: visual jokes, throwaway lines, and deadpan reactions land so fast that the movie barely pauses to breathe. The downside is simple and honest — if a person does not enjoy broad parody, the whole machine can feel relentless rather than charming. In practice it plays like a joke factory that refuses to slow down, and the rhythm is a big part of the pleasure. Compared with ordinary comedies, it is much more aggressive about piling on absurdity and much less interested in warmth or realism. Airplane! suits viewers who want joke after joke and do not mind the film exhausting its own speed, because the energy is half the punchline.
