Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair keeps the platformer loop tight by mixing side-scrolling stages with an overworld that can be explored in different orders. By our assessment, its best idea is the Impossible Lair itself: a hard final gauntlet that gives the whole game a clear endpoint and makes the shorter stages feel like tools for learning the run. The trade-off is that the humour and collectathon flavour are very much in the old Banjo-Kazooie mould, so it can feel self-consciously retro rather than fresh. In practice it is the sort of game where moving, rolling, and timing jumps matter more than story. Compared with many modern platformers, it is more about route choice and replaying levels with better knowledge than about constant novelty. The levels are cleanly readable, the pace stays brisk, and the overworld changes how you approach the stages instead of just linking them together. It asks for patience with repeated attempts at the Lair, and the checkpoint-heavy structure gives it a friendlier edge than pure punishment.
