YIIK: A Postmodern RPG is a very talky role-playing game that tries to wrap combat, puzzles, and a strange modern-world story into one awkward package. By our assessment, its most obvious strength is the odd, stubborn identity: it is hard to mistake for anything else, and it keeps swinging for an unusual tone. The trade-off is that the pacing and battle flow can feel stubborn and uneven, so the game asks for patience that not every player will want to spend. In practice it is full of dialogue, self-conscious ideas, and systems that can feel more argumentative than smooth. Compared with more conventional JRPGs, it is less polished and far more idiosyncratic.
