Walking Simulator

Walking Simulator is the name people use for games that are built around moving through a space, looking at things, and letting the place do most of the work. By our assessment, that makes it a useful label for a whole style, but a weak promise if someone expects puzzles, combat, or score-chasing. The strength is that it can give a strong sense of place with very little mechanical clutter; the downside is that the player’s job may be almost entirely to pay attention and keep going. In practice these games are slow, direct, and often narrow in what you can actually do. Compared with fuller adventure games, they trade systems for mood and observation. Walking Simulator is best for people who want atmosphere and traversal first, not action or deep mechanical play.
