Valkyrie: Journey To Midgard

Valkyrie: Journey To Midgard leans on Norse myth and the familiar action-adventure promise of travelling through a legendary world, which is a useful starting point for players who want that setting first. By our assessment, the appeal is mainly in the theme and the journey framing, not in any sign that it is trying to reinvent the genre. That also means the risk is familiar: mythic packaging can carry a game a long way before the mechanics prove whether there is more underneath. In practice this kind of title lives on exploration, combat rhythm and how much the world feels like a real route rather than a string of scenes. It sits among many other mythology-themed adventures, so it needs its own mechanical identity to stand out. Valkyrie: Journey To Midgard makes sense for people drawn to that mythic travel idea, while players looking for a sharply original system should be cautious.
