Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe

Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe takes the familiar noughts-and-crosses grid and turns it into a meta-game where each move sends the next player into a smaller board. By our assessment, that is the real appeal: it adds planning, local tactics, and a little forward pressure to a rule set everyone already knows. The downside is the same thing that makes it clever, because the board state can become crowded and hard to read for anyone who just wants a quick casual match. In play it is a game of counting options and forcing awkward replies, not of flashy moments. Compared with ordinary Tic-Tac-Toe, it has far more structure; compared with bigger abstract strategy games, it is still very small and clean. Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe is best for players who enjoy simple rules with a sharper brain-teaser underneath, and it will feel too dry to people who want luck, theme, or spectacle.
