Trials of Fire asks for planning more than reflexes, and that is the reason people reach for it when they want a tactical deck game instead of a pure action loop. By our assessment, its best quality is the mix of card play, party positioning, and a run-based structure that makes every move feel like a small resource decision. The trade-off is that it can be slower and more deliberate than a flashy strategy game, with each turn carrying weight and recovery sometimes costing a run. In practice that means reading enemies, lining up cards, and managing a party through hostile encounters. Trials of Fire sits closer to tactical roguelike strategy than to simple card battlers, and it rewards attention to the board.
