Trainz: A New Era

Trainz: A New Era demands patience, because the pleasure here comes from laying track, building routes, and running a railway scene rather than from quick missions or instant rewards. By our assessment, that is exactly its strength: few games give train fans this much room to build, edit, and watch a custom line come to life. The trade-off is obvious, since the interface and the simulation systems can feel heavy to newcomers and the fun depends on liking slow, hands-on creation. In practice it is less a game of immediate action than a toolset wrapped around railway obsession, with the editor doing as much of the work as the routes themselves. Compared with arcade train titles, Trainz sits on the sim side of the fence and asks for more fiddling, but also gives more control. It suits players who want to spend time designing railways and do not mind learning the systems; if the appeal of trains is mostly speed and movement, this will feel too technical.
