The Shapeshifting Detective

The Shapeshifting Detective leans on its one unusual trick: the player questions suspects while switching bodies, then uses that borrowed face to press for answers in a murder mystery. By our assessment, that makes it more of an interactive detective story than a standard adventure game, and the gimmick is strong because it changes how every conversation works. The downside is that the whole game lives or dies on dialogue, so anyone who wants puzzles, action, or a broad sandbox may find the structure narrow. In practice it is a lot of talking, listening, and returning to the same people with a different identity to see what changes. Compared with heavier detective games, it is simpler in systems but more focused on social manipulation and suspicion. The Shapeshifting Detective will click for players who enjoy story-first investigations, and it will not do much for anyone looking for mechanical variety.
