The Roottrees are Dead

The Roottrees are Dead is the sort of game that makes family-history sleuthing the whole point, turning names, branches, and clues into a detective puzzle. By our assessment, its big strength is the structure of careful deduction: it rewards note-taking, comparison, and slow reasoning instead of speed. The downside is that deduction games can be unforgiving when the player misses one small link, and this one sounds built to ask for close attention. In practice, that means reading documents, fitting relationships together, and letting the answer emerge from cross-checking rather than from action scenes. It sits near the better-known logic and investigation games, but with a sharper focus on genealogy and reconstruction than on spectacle. The title is memorable because it is odd and specific, and the game seems to wear that strangeness as part of the puzzle itself.
