The Magic Circle

The Magic Circle is one of those game ideas that turns the rules themselves into the playground. By our assessment, its best trick is the way it makes writing, editing, and exploiting game logic part of the play, so the player is not just solving puzzles but meddling with the world’s own code. That gives it a clever, self-aware charm that stands out from straightforward puzzle adventures. The downside is that the joke depends on liking meta-humour and on being willing to follow a game that keeps pointing at its own construction. In practice it feels less like a conventional quest and more like being let loose inside a broken development toy, with jokes and systems rubbing against each other. Compared with standard puzzle games, it is sharper and stranger, and less interested in neat immersion. The Magic Circle suits people who enjoy games about games, and it does not try to hide that fact.
