The Howler

The Howler is the sort of game that lives or dies on its core idea, and by our assessment that idea is where its appeal has to come from. The name suggests something loud or feral, but in practice what matters is whether its actual play loop gives you a clear hook, because games with a title like this can easily lean on tone more than systems. The downside of that kind of design is obvious: if the mechanics are thin, the whole thing can feel like a concept stretched over a short run. What tends to work in games of this shape is immediate identity and a strong mood; what tends not to is depth for people who want long-term systems. Compared with bigger, more established genres, this kind of project usually asks for curiosity more than commitment. The Howler is therefore a cautious pick, better for players who enjoy trying odd, compact games than for anyone looking for a large, layered experience.
