The Complex

The Complex is at its best when it turns a branching FMV setup into a tight pressure cooker of choices. By our assessment, the appeal is the way it mixes live-action performance, dialogue timing, and route-hunting, so the player spends more time reading people than solving systems. That gives it the texture of a choice-driven thriller rather than a conventional puzzle game. Its weakness is also familiar to this kind of work: once the novelty of the branching structure wears off, the route logic can feel more mechanical than dramatic. In practice it plays like a sequence of pauses, reactions, and second-guessing, with the camera and performances doing a lot of the work. The Complex sits alongside other FMV narrative games, and it is for players who enjoy replaying scenes to see where a different line leads, not for anyone who wants action to carry the whole evening.
