The Black Masses

The Black Masses stands out because it aims at crowd chaos on a scale most action games avoid, with huge numbers of zombies and a medieval setting wrapped around that idea. By our assessment, that premise gives it a very specific appeal: the fun is in the pressure of being surrounded, not in polished duels or careful balance. The downside is just as specific, because a game built around enormous swarms can struggle with clarity, performance, and long-term variety. In practice it sounds like a constant struggle to read space, find a route, and keep the crowd from swallowing the player whole. Compared with standard zombie games, it is less about horror and more about battlefield control. The project became known partly for its ambitious scope and partly for the trouble that came with that ambition, which fits a lot of big systems-heavy games. The Black Masses is for players who like large-scale mess and can live with rough edges; people wanting tidy combat or a finished feel are unlikely to be satisfied.
