The Basement Collection is really a bundle for people who want to see where Edmund McMillen’s early indie ideas were coming from, not a single neat game with one shape. By our assessment, its best quality is variety: several short pieces, each with its own mood, visual style, and odd mechanics, so the collection works almost like a sketchbook of experiments. The downside is obvious too, because not every piece lands the same way and the whole package feels uneven by design. In practice you move from one compact game to another, and the interest comes from watching the ideas change size and tone. It belongs to the kind of anthology that is more about an artist’s range than about one polished loop.
