Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is the version of a long-running Japanese role-playing game that people reach for when they want a big party adventure with real-time combat and a lot of banter between battles. By our assessment, it works best in the way Tales games often do: lively characters, a combat system that keeps the pace moving, and a structure that spreads the story across towns, dungeons, and side errands. The downside is familiar too, because this kind of JRPG asks for a lot of roaming, dialogue, and menu time, and the remaster label does not turn it into something modern in every respect. In practice it feels like a generous, busy package rather than a lean one. It sits comfortably among other Tales releases as a fuller edition for people who want that specific mix of story, party chatter, and action combat. If someone wants a brisk, stripped-down role-playing game, this is not that shape at all.
