The unusual pleasure of TR-49 is searching an archive through a fictional computer interface, using scraps of text and audio as clues. Rather than moving through a conventional action scene, players enter terms, examine documents, and follow connections between records. The mystery develops through what the archive contains and how its pieces fit together, so patience and close reading matter. By our assessment, this gives the puzzle game a strong identity and makes discovery feel tied to the story. The trade-off is a deliberately narrow pace: anyone wanting combat, movement, or frequent changes of scenery will find little of that here. The terminal remains the place where each new lead has to be followed.
