Stronghold HD (2012) is the castle-building side of real-time strategy, and it keeps the focus on economy first, walls second, and combat only when the siege machines finally reach the gate. By our assessment, it works best for players who like laying out production chains, setting taxes, and watching a fortress slowly become hard to crack. The old feel is part of the appeal, with the HD update mostly making the classic game easier to live with on modern screens. The downside is that it can feel fussy if you want quick skirmishes, because success depends on balancing food, wood, approval, and military pressure at the same time. In practice it is a game of pauses, checks, and one more adjustment to the castle plan. Stronghold HD (2012) sits closer to a management game than to a pure battle-focused RTS.
