Star Trek Online is the long-running MMO for Star Trek fans who want to fly ships, run away teams and dip into familiar Federation, Klingon and Romulan territory. By our assessment, its main appeal is the amount of franchise material it packs in: ship classes, episode-style missions and a steady parade of recognizable uniforms and aliens. The trade-off is the usual MMO clutter, with menus, currencies and upgrade tracks that can feel busier than the combat itself. In practice it is a game of ships first and character builds second, with ground missions acting as a change of pace. Compared with a cleaner single-player space game, it is messier but more expansive in lore. It rewards people who care about Star Trek references and system tinkering.
