Sonic CD

Sonic CD is remembered for pushing the Sonic formula toward time travel, alternate versions of levels, and a stronger sense of exploration than the standard rush-to-the-goal structure. By our assessment, that makes it one of the more distinctive classic Sonic entries, because it asks the player to search for good routes and hidden moments instead of simply racing forward. The trade-off is that its time-based mechanics can feel fussy, and the flow changes depending on whether the player is chasing speed or trying to manipulate the stage state. In practice it is a Sonic game that pauses for curiosity, which is unusual for the series and sometimes awkward when the momentum breaks. It sits apart from the most straightforward Mega Drive entries, closer to an experiment than a template. That makes it interesting for people who want a different kind of Sonic, and less satisfying for anyone who only wants pure straight-line velocity.
