Soccer Manager 2020

Soccer Manager 2020 is for people who enjoy the spreadsheet side of football: tactics, transfers, squad building, and the long rhythm of running a club instead of playing matches directly. By our assessment, its main strength is breadth, because these management games live or die on how many levers they give you to pull. The downside is the usual one for the genre: a lot of menu work, lots of numbers, and very little of the physical drama of football itself. In practice it is a game of planning, adjusting lineups, and waiting for results rather than watching every kick. Compared with console football games, it sits on the management end of the spectrum, not the action end. The name carries 2020 as part of the title, and that is all it needs here; the real appeal is the managerial routine behind it. It suits players who want control and club-building more than match-day spectacle.
