Skul: The Hero Slayer

Skul: The Hero Slayer is at its best when a roguelite keeps forcing you to swap bodies, stack skull powers, and improvise a build from whatever drops in front of you. By our assessment, that constant reshuffling is the point: each run feels different because the skulls change your moves, reach, and tempo so much. The honest downside is that the randomness can leave some runs flatter than others, and learning which skull combinations click takes patience. In practice it is a fast, readable action game with a lot of screen movement and a lot of restarting. Compared with slower roguelites, it is more immediate and more aggressive, but it also gives you less room to settle into one favorite style. The art and combat carry it, and the build variety keeps it from turning stale too quickly.
