Shenmue I & II

Shenmue I & II is for players who want a slow, detailed adventure built around wandering, talking, looking for people, and handling small jobs between bigger story beats. By our assessment, its real strength is the sense of place: towns feel lived in, and the routine of checking signs, asking directions, and following leads gives it a very specific rhythm. The trade-off is that the pace is famously deliberate, so anyone who wants constant action or a tight modern mission structure will feel the drag quickly. In practice it behaves like an old-school story game with a lot of menus, conversations, and waiting around, not a streamlined action title. It sits as one of the reference points for the later open-world adventure style, but it remains more idiosyncratic and slower than most of what followed.
