Shadows Over Loathing

Shadows Over Loathing wins with its deadpan oddness: a turn-based RPG where the world is full of strange jokes, awkward quests, and a deliberately silly version of Americana. By our assessment, that tone is the main draw, and it is backed by light, approachable combat rather than dense systems. The downside is that the joke-heavy style will not land for everyone, and the combat is simpler than in more demanding RPGs. In practice it plays like a wander-through-the-bizarre game, with plenty of dialogue, side tasks, and little surprises tucked into ordinary spaces. It sits comfortably beside other Loathing games, but it is also easier to pick up than many sprawling role-playing titles. Shadows Over Loathing is best for players who want humor, exploration, and a softer tactical load, and it does not try to be a serious epic.
