Sea Dogs: To Each His Own asks for patience, because it is one of those pirate RPGs where trading, sailing, boarding, and reputation all matter in the long run. By our assessment, its strongest point is the sense of scale: routes, factions, ship upkeep, and crew management give it more of a hard-edged sandbox feel than a simple swashbuckling story. The downside is the familiar one for this kind of game, namely a clunky interface and a lot of systems that can feel fussy before they feel rewarding. In practice it is the sort of game where you spend time in ports, on the map, and in menus as much as in combat. It sits near the Mount & Blade side of the spectrum more than the cinematic pirate side, and that tells you a lot about the pace it wants.
