Sands of Salzaar

Sands of Salzaar asks for patience with a hybrid of strategy map, party RPG, and wandering desert fantasy. By our assessment, its best idea is the way it mixes roaming, recruiting, and tactical fights into a single loop, so the player is never only managing menus or only brawling on the field. The downside is that this kind of blend can feel rough if someone wants one clean genre lane; the systems are broad enough to be interesting and uneven enough to show their seams. In practice it is about building a force, moving across a big arid world, and choosing when to push on and when to stop, which gives it a very particular rhythm. It sits off to one side of the strategy-RPG field, more sandboxy than a strict campaign game and less polished than the biggest names in the genre. Sands of Salzaar is therefore a curious pick rather than a safe one, and that uncertainty is part of its appeal.
