STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed II tries to sell power fantasy first and restraint never, with lightsaber combat, Force pulls, throws, and a heavy, cinematic style built around Vader-era spectacle. By our assessment, it is strongest when it is letting the player tear through enemies with generous animations and simple, readable controls. The problem is that it also feels narrow, because the action has less variety and less room to breathe than the better Star Wars action games. In practice it is a straightforward third-person hack-and-slash with a strong licensed skin, quick escalation, and very little subtlety. Against the broader field of Star Wars games, it sits closer to flashy fan service than to deep action design. People who want a loud Jedi power trip may still find enough to enjoy, while anyone looking for real combat depth will see the ceiling quickly.
