Rise of Nations: Extended Edition asks for the kind of attention that real-time strategy still demands: economy first, territory second, and an eye on when to stop building and start pushing. By our assessment, it is good at making a long campaign of growth feel readable, with the nation-spanning scope of Civilization-style ideas mixed into real-time battles. The downside is the usual strategy burden: micromanagement, learning the tech tree, and a pace that can turn punishing if the player falls behind early. In practice it is the sort of game where borders, resources and timing all matter at once, and the pleasure comes from turning a small start into a broad map presence. It sits between classic RTS and grand strategy, and the Extended Edition mainly preserves that older design instead of changing it into something softer.
