ROME: Total War is the classic grand-strategy and real-time tactics mix for players who like managing provinces on one layer and fighting battles on another. By our assessment, its lasting strength is the scale: campaign management, diplomacy, and large-field combat all feed into each other in a way that made the series famous. The downside is also part of that design, because the game asks for patience, menu reading, and comfort with old-school strategy pacing. In practice it feels like two games stitched together, with the map game and the battlefield each carrying real weight. Compared with simpler strategy titles, it is heavier, slower, and more demanding, but also richer in what it asks the player to juggle. ROME: Total War remains one of the clearest examples of what Total War means in the first place.
