Puyo Puyo Champions strips the series down to its competitive core: fast falling blobs, chain building, garbage attacks, and the pressure of reading the board faster than the other side. By our assessment, that focus is its main virtue, because it turns Puyo Puyo into a clean head-to-head puzzle fighter instead of a story-heavy or mode-heavy package. The cost is content breadth, since this is not the place for a big adventure wrapper or a lot of side systems. In play it is sharp, quick, and very much about pattern recognition under stress. Compared with bigger puzzle games, it is narrower but also clearer about what it wants: versus matches and serious practice. That makes it a good fit for players who already like competitive falling-block or chain-building play, and less so for people who want a long solo campaign. The ceiling is still the same old Puyo ceiling, though: if the match-up and chain mind-game does not click, nothing else in the package will rescue it.
