Precipice of Darkness, Episode One stands out because it is openly an episode, not a sealed-off giant, and that gives it a serial, chapter-like feel. By our assessment, that format is both the point and the limit: it can sketch a world with humor and pace, but it also has less room than a full-length role-playing game to settle into deep systems or long arcs. In use, episode-based games tend to move quickly, introduce their ideas early, and leave you with the sense that they are setting a table rather than serving the whole meal. This one sits in the older adventure-and-RPG space where writing, dialog, and comic tone can matter as much as combat. The downside is that a first episode always carries the burden of promising more than it can finish. Precipice of Darkness, Episode One is a format piece first, and that is exactly how it should be judged.
