Occult

Occult leans on atmosphere first, which is exactly what a horror-minded game with that title ought to do. By our assessment, its main promise is mood: secrecy, dread, and the suggestion that you are dealing with forces that do not care whether they are understood. That can be effective in play when the mechanics keep feeding the feeling instead of explaining it away. The downside is that occult horror can become a thin wrapper if the systems beneath it are simple or repetitive, and the title alone does not guarantee much depth. In practice this kind of game often lives or dies by pacing, sound, and small reveals rather than by big action. It sits closer to eerie mystery than to straightforward monster fighting, so the people who want a clean rules-first game may bounce off it. Occult is more about the tone of the room than the size of the toolbox.
