Nyctophobia

Nyctophobia is built around one simple fear: not seeing what is close to you. By our assessment, that makes it a game for players who like tension created by limited information rather than by combat or long planning. Its best trick is obvious and effective, because darkness changes every move into a guess and every guess into a risk. The downside is just as clear: once the idea has been understood, the whole experience lives or dies on how well the rest of the design keeps that pressure alive. In play, that usually means careful movement, listening, and a lot of second-guessing instead of the usual map-reading habits. Compared with louder horror games, Nyctophobia is more about uncertainty than spectacle, which gives it a distinct place in the genre. It is worth looking at for people who enjoy nervous, information-starved play, and less so for anyone who wants a broad systems game.
