Nidhogg is a fencing duel game for two players where spacing, timing, and nerve matter more than flashy move lists, and that makes it easy to understand but hard to master. By our assessment, its real strength is how each match turns into a quick, filthy tug-of-war for ground, with constant reversals and very little dead time. The downside is that this stripped-down design can feel narrow if someone wants variety, story, or a long progression system. In practice it is a game of lunging, retreating, and reading the other person’s impatience frame by frame. Nidhogg sits near the top of the minimalist competitive end of the genre, and it is most satisfying when the duel is close enough to stay tense.
