Mages of Mystralia

Mages of Mystralia is built around spell crafting, so it speaks to players who like fantasy combat with a bit of tinkering rather than a fixed spellbook. By our assessment, its real strength is that custom magic system: combining runes and learning how different effects interact gives the game a clearer identity than a plain action-adventure. The downside is that this kind of design can feel fiddly when the puzzle of making spells is more interesting than the fights themselves. In play it tends to be a game about experimentation, then execution, with a lot of attention on how each spell behaves in the field. It sits between light action RPGs and more puzzle-minded fantasy games, not quite a pure action title and not a deep systems sandbox either. Mages of Mystralia fits players who enjoy building their own tools and do not mind a slower pace between bursts of combat.
