Livelock

Livelock is a top-down action game that pushes fast gunfire, robotic enemies, and constant movement, so the player spends most of the time dodging, shooting, and keeping the screen under control. By our assessment, it does its job best when the combat stays dense and readable, because that is where the twin-stick style feels sharp rather than messy. Its downside is also the genre’s limit: if someone wants deep systems or a slow build, this is the wrong shape of game, since it is built for quick encounters and a straightforward loop. Compared with larger action games, it is leaner and more arcade-like, with less room for story and more room for reflexes. Livelock makes the most sense for players who like crisp, busy fights and do not need a long ramp-up, and it ends up living on pace more than on variety.
