Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is a side-scrolling action-exploration game for players who like movement, combat, and the feel of a strange machine gliding through hostile spaces. By our assessment, its best-known hook is the shadowy, alien look of the world, with navigation and upgrades doing most of the work. The downside is that this kind of game lives or dies on atmosphere and pacing, so if the setting does not grab you, the structure can feel thin. In play, it is about pushing through a mapped world, learning routes, and using new tools to open blocked paths. It sits in the tradition of Metroid-style exploration more than in straightforward action. Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is more about mood and traversal than about constant variety.
