Immortals of Aveum

Immortals of Aveum tries to sell a full fantasy-shooter campaign built around spellcasting instead of guns, so the player spends most of the time swapping colored magic, chaining attacks, and moving through linear encounters. By our assessment, the pitch is the strongest thing about it: a first-person magical combat game with big effects and a clear idea of what replaces the usual arsenal. The problem is that the formula also makes it easy to feel familiar, because the campaign structure and spectacle-first design can leave less room for surprise than the premise suggests. In practice it is a lot of movement, effects, and cooldown management, with the story carrying some of the load. Against other shooters it is notable for swapping bullets for spells, but it still sits close to the corridor-driven action game rather than to an open-world fantasy system. It is a fit for players who want a magic-forward shooter and not a deep role-playing loop.
