Hex Commander: Fantasy Heroes asks for the sort of attention that turn-based fans usually enjoy: positioning, unit match-ups, and a steady eye on the battlefield. By our assessment, it does well when it keeps the focus on hex-grid tactics and fantasy armies rather than trying to be bigger or flashier than it is. The downside is that the structure can feel familiar if someone has already played a lot of tactical army games, because the pleasure comes from execution more than surprise. In practice it is about moving squads, reading terrain, and making each attack count, so the rhythm is measured instead of frantic. It sits close to other hex-based strategy games, and its best place is with players who want clean tactics and can live with a fairly classic shape.
