Hard West

Hard West stands out because it drapes a tactical western over supernatural horror, so the usual gunfights come with demons, curses, and a bleak frontier mood. By our assessment, that mix is the reason to look at it: the setting does a lot of the work that a plain strategy game would leave to systems alone. The downside is that the tactical layer can feel rough around the edges, and the strange tone does more than the design to keep it memorable. In practice it is a turn-based game of positioning, shot choices, and risky encounters where cover matters and bad luck can bite. It sits in the smaller, moodier corner of strategy games rather than among sleek tactical showcases. Hard West is most attractive if the setting is the hook; if all you want is elegant tactics, there are cleaner places to go.
