Guild of Dungeoneering Ultimate Edition turns dungeon crawling into a deck-driven, almost tabletop-like structure, which is what makes it memorable. By our assessment, the charm is in building the dungeon as you go rather than simply walking through it, so each run has a slightly mischievous puzzle feel. The downside is that this kind of system can feel more scripted than a free-form RPG, and the jokes and style do some of the lifting that raw mechanical depth does elsewhere. In practice it is a game of placement, risk, and small tactical decisions instead of pure power growth.
