Guardians of Middle-earth has the built-in appeal of Tolkien's world, and that is the main reason people look at it at all. By our assessment, it tries to turn that setting into a multiplayer arena game with familiar heroes and a MOBA-style structure. The problem with that idea is simple: it lives on a crowded field, where the map, the team play, and the roster have to do a lot of work to stand out. In practice, this kind of game is about quick matches, lane pressure, and coordinating with other players more than about exploring Middle-earth itself. Compared with major MOBAs, it feels more like a licensed take than a genre leader, and that is the ceiling here. Guardians of Middle-earth is for Tolkien fans who specifically want that world inside an arena format.
