Gratuitous Space Battles 2 is for players who enjoy watching fleets clash while they spend their time on ship design and tactical setup rather than direct reflex play. By our assessment, the strongest part is exactly that layers-of-planning feel: the fun comes from building absurd-looking fleets, arranging weapons and defenses, and then seeing the battle unfold with very little hand-holding. The downside is written into the name, because the game is openly more about spectacle and logistics than about intimate control. In practice it can feel half strategy toy, half machine for watching your plans collide. Compared with leaner space tactics games, it is louder and more chaotic, and that is its charm.
