Grand Theft Auto 3

Grand Theft Auto 3 is the entry that made the series feel like a living 3D crime sandbox, with cars, pedestrians, radio stations, and the freedom to wander between missions. By our assessment, that open structure is still its biggest strength: it lets the player ignore the main path for long stretches and simply mess around in the city. The trade-off is obvious now, because the handling, camera, and mission design belong to an older era and can feel stiff compared with later open-world games. In practice it is a game of momentum and trouble, where every shortcut can turn into a chase. Compared with the later entries, it is rougher but more important as the template. Grand Theft Auto 3 still matters most as the starting point for the modern series style.
