Gensokyo Night Festival is a fan-made action game set in the Touhou world, so it mainly reaches players who already like that setting and want something built around fast movement and character-driven battles. By our assessment, it can be appealing for that reason alone, because it trades on a familiar cast and a lively, small-scale feel rather than on huge systems or polished spectacle. The downside is the obvious one for a niche tie-in: if the setting does not already matter, much of the pull disappears. In practice it is the sort of game that depends on how much someone enjoys the world around it, not just the combat on the screen.
