Gears Tactics

Gears Tactics takes the heavy-cover language of Gears of War and turns it into a turn-based squad game, so the appeal is to players who like tactics but still want the series' brute-force look. By our assessment, it works best when you are lining up overwatch, flanking, and chain attacks, because each turn asks for clean positioning rather than twitch shooting. The trade-off is that the spectacle of Gears now sits behind the board-game rhythm, and some of the series' rough physical energy is deliberately subdued. In practice it is about moving soldiers from cover to cover, surviving enemy specials, and squeezing value out of each action point. Compared with XCOM-style tactics, it is more aggressive and more armor-heavy, but also less open-ended in tone. Gears Tactics is a good fit for anyone who wants tactical planning wrapped in a loud, muscular setting, and the combat map does most of the talking.
