Gears 5

Gears 5 is a cover shooter built for people who like pop-out cover, squad firefights, and a big-budget campaign with the series' usual metal-heavy look. By our assessment, it does its best work in the shoot-and-move rhythm: ducking, peeking, and trading bursts feels clean, and the set pieces are staged with real polish. The obvious cost is that it is still a Gears game, which means a fairly rigid structure and a lot of reliance on the same cover loop. In practice it plays like a polished corridor shooter with occasional larger spaces and a co-op layer on top. Compared with loose third-person action games, it is tighter and more scripted, and compared with older Gears entries it mostly refines the formula instead of remaking it. The series identity is strong here, and the name itself carries the 5 as part of the title rather than any sort of measure.
