Fossil Hunters

Fossil Hunters sounds like a dig-and-collect game first of all, and that is exactly the sort of thing people reach for when they want careful searching rather than fast reflexes. The draw is the fossil-hunting loop itself: unearthing pieces, sorting them, and slowly building up a collection. By our assessment, that can be satisfying if the game gives the work enough structure, but the premise also leaves a clear weak spot, because repetition can set in once the same excavation pattern starts to repeat. In play, this kind of game usually lives on patience, small finds, and the pleasure of putting fragments together. It sits somewhere between casual collecting and more methodical simulation, not as tense as a survival game and not as freewheeling as an adventure. Fossil Hunters is for players who like slow progress and discovery; people wanting constant variety will probably feel the pace most. The title tells you the whole idea, and the whole idea is also the ceiling.
