FPS Chess turns chess pieces into first-person shooters, and that joke is the whole hook. By our assessment, it is a novelty game first and a serious chess alternative never; the appeal is in the absurd switch from quiet board logic to sudden gunplay. That also means the shelf life is limited, because once the gag lands, the structure does not have much else to reveal. In practice it is clumsy, noisy, and very much built around the idea rather than around depth. Compared with real chess it is not trying to teach strategy, and compared with proper shooters it is not trying to be a polished action game. FPS Chess is the sort of thing people open for a laugh, a clip, or a brief curiosity, and it stays closest to that one odd idea.
