FINAL FANTASY XIII-2

FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 is a sequel RPG that lives for players who liked the first game’s world and are willing to spend time on time travel, party tinkering, and long menus. By our assessment, its best qualities are the stronger sense of structure in its regions and the way it lets you chase different outcomes through its timeline setup. The downside is that it still carries the series’ habit of explaining itself through systems and screens, so it can feel fussy rather than elegant. In play, it asks for the kind of attention that goes into build choices, monster recruitment, and revisiting areas with new context. Against other Final Fantasy entries, it sits in the more experimental corner, less about a straight march and more about rearranging pieces. FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 is a game for people who enjoy role-playing systems first and smooth pacing second, and it does not hide that preference at all.
